Advanced Avalanche Monitoring in Angelus Basin, Nelson Lakes National Park

Envirolapse, in collaboration with the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC), has successfully deployed a remote avalanche monitoring camera in Angelus Basin, Nelson Lakes National Park. Designed to enhance avalanche forecasting, real-time weather assessment, and backcountry safety, this system provides invaluable insights for the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA), the Department of Conservation (DOC), and outdoor enthusiasts navigating the region’s challenging alpine terrain.

Angelus Basin is a high-risk avalanche zone, attracting trampers, climbers, and backcountry skiers who often face unpredictable snow conditions and extreme weather shifts. Previously, avalanche forecasting in the area relied primarily on manual observations and weather models, with limited real-time visual data. The installation of this remotely accessible, solar-powered camera has transformed avalanche risk assessment by providing continuous, real-time imagery of critical slopes, ensuring forecasters and backcountry users can make more informed decisions.

One of the biggest challenges of this project was ensuring long-term durability in an extreme alpine environment. Positioned at high altitude, the camera system had to withstand strong winds, sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall, and exposure to New Zealand’s notoriously curious alpine parrot, the kea. To overcome these challenges, the system was designed with reinforced enclosures, secure guy-wiring, and protective conduit shielding to prevent interference from the elements and wildlife. Connectivity was another major factor, requiring a stable 4G Vodafone link to ensure reliable data transmission without on-site intervention.

Beyond avalanche monitoring, this system also plays a crucial role in supporting outdoor safety and trip planning. The camera feed is integrated into platforms like NZ Avalanche Advisory (NZAA), Plan My Walk, and the Mountain Safety Council website, allowing trampers, climbers, and backcountry skiers to check current conditions before heading into potentially hazardous terrain.

This project sets a new benchmark for remote alpine monitoring in New Zealand, demonstrating how technology can improve safety, enhance environmental awareness, and support research in extreme locations. Overcoming extreme weather, remote access limitations, and kea interference to ensure continuous monitoring.

Deploying a remote camera system in Angelus Basin posed significant environmental and logistical challenges due to the region’s high-altitude exposure, extreme weather, and remote location. The installation site experiences strong winds, heavy snowfall, and freezing temperatures, requiring a monitoring system that could operate autonomously in sub-zero conditions while maintaining stable connectivity and image quality.

Durability was a key concern, as the system had to withstand both natural elements and interference from kea, New Zealand’s highly intelligent and inquisitive alpine parrot. Kea are notorious for dismantling exposed equipment, tearing at cables, and damaging enclosures, so reinforced casing, secure cable protection, and kea-proofing measures were essential to ensure long-term system reliability.

Connectivity was another challenge. With no direct power supply or infrastructure, the camera had to be powered entirely by solar energy, maintaining efficiency during winter months with limited sunlight. The system also relied on Vodafone 4G for data transmission, requiring careful positioning to maintain a stable and uninterrupted connection to relay real-time images without manual intervention.

The remote location of the installation meant that all equipment had to be carried manually through rugged terrain, with minimal opportunity for ongoing maintenance. The design had to be completely self-sufficient, reducing the need for on-site visits and ensuring seamless operation in some of New Zealand’s most unpredictable mountain conditions.
